On Saturday I woke up to blue skies and sunshine. I looked at my weather app and there was a good chance this would be my only sunny day- rain was forecast the rest of the week. I was determined to take advantage. I found an art deco cafe near my apartment that Nikola, the food tour guide, recommended. They are known for their homemade pastries.
With it being such a beautiful day I decided to head toward the castle to enjoy the gardens.
I found the base of the castle. Erich said it wasn’t worth paying to go in, and I was a little tired from climbing the hills, so I decided to abandon this task and head for the Funicular- I’d enjoy a nice ride to the top of the mountain and take it from there.
Unfortunately, about halfway there I realized that google maps was guiding me to the top of the Funicular instead of the bottom! I was equally disappointed and pleased that I would be getting my exercise in climbing this hill.
I think I enjoyed the views more going at this slower pace and stopping to catch my breath when I needed to.
Down there was the river I’d floated on yesterday!
And finally I reached the top!
I bought my ticket and rode the Funicular down to the bottom of the hill where I found a long line of people waiting to do what I had planned to do in the first place: ride up. That would have taken forever!
I reached the bottom and tried to decide how I wanted to enjoy the day. I wandered over to the river. It was like all of Prague had come outside to enjoy the sunshine. It reminded me of the first day of nice weather in Denver after a cold winter. I thought this would be the perfect day to rent a paddle boat, but I was alone. I think I’d enjoy that more with friends. I decided to find a beer garden.
I asked the waiter to choose a flight for me, and he chose well- my favorites were the cherry beer (10) and the pineapple beer (the second one- 4). I hadn’t heard of pickled cheese, so I thought I’d give it a try- it was delicious!
That night I’d booked a Medieval dinner. A few weeks ago the internet said the weather wouldn’t be very nice. The event looked touristy and cheesy, but I was drawn in by the menu. One could choose three or five courses, and for the main, choose between chicken, pork, another kind of meat, vegetarian or gluten free. So many times the vegetarian option turns out to be mostly white food- potatoes, fried cheese, tofu. This vegetarian menu had vegetable skewers, spinach pie, potato pancakes. I ordered the five course vegetarian meal because I wanted to try the pancakes AND the spinach pie.
We were told to arrive 15 minutes early. I arrived about 20 minutes early and stood in a line that didn’t move for 30 minutes. The check in was slow and then I was led to the dungeon.
I was seated in front of the first course which definitely had meat.
Now this wasn’t technically a problem for me because I’m not a vegetarian, but after waiting for a long time to get in, I was curious to see if they’d get the rest of my meal correct. I was really excited about those vegetables!
The lights dimmed and the music sounded around the room. A couple of guys came out and had a sword fight. Then they came around and handed everyone a bowl of potato soup.
Then the belly dancers came out and we were given our next course.
This repeated throughout the night- cheesy entertainment followed by another course.
The grand finale had fire and everyone came out and danced. My favorite part was that I finally found a meal with mostly vegetables! It was everything I wanted it to be.
